Membrane keypads

The membrane keypad is a human-machine interface. It is lighter and less costly than a mechanical keyboard, and can be customized for the needs of the client. It connects directly to the motherboard through a flexible strip, with connectors.

It is made of stacked front faces, and a printed circuit, which make contact with each other through a spacer.

Flat membrane keypads

Electrical contact is made between a conductive silver dot printed on the front face or an upper circuit, and a silver contact printed on the lower circuit. The touch sensation is limited when the keys are activated.

Membrane keypad with spring cups

Electrical contact is made with a metal cup inserted between the front face and the printed circuit. This type of keypad provides a touch sensation when the keys are touched.

Membrane keypad with embossed keys

Electrical contact is made between a conductive silver dot printed on the front face and the printed circuit. This type of keypad provides a touch sensation when the pre-embossed key is depressed, using goffering or finger guides.

Various options are possible with this type of keypad:

  • Integrated LED lights can provide lighting for some functions.
  • Water and dust-resistant
  • Shielding (to prevent electro-magnetic discharge)
  • Connectors to the motherboard
